A blast from Cody VanKerschaever only thirty seconds into overtime vaulted the Maryville College men's soccer team past USA South Athletic Conference rival Methodist University 1-0 on Saturday evening on Maryville's home pitch.
The Scots offense kept the pressure on the Monarchs with five shots in the first period, three finding Methodist keeper Jonathan Moore. Maryville defense continued their lock-down presence allowing only a trio of shots with one towards MC keeper Ryan Jorgensen.
Neither team touched the net before the intermission.
The second half continued to be an offensive push by the Scots. Maryville pounded eight shots to Methodist's pair of attacks. Methodist's Moore recorded six saves to close out regulation while Maryville's Jorgensen was not challenged in net.
At the 9:29 mark in overtime, Maryville's Johnny Rakhmonberdiev took a through ball and touched it towards VanKerschaever for his third assist of the season. The senior midfielder from Apopka, Florida laced a left-footer into the bottom of the right of the net allowing the Scots to cheer on their 11th win of the season. The goal was Cody's third of his senior campaign. The victory was their 5th in a row and their 5th via a shutout on the season. MC moved to 3-0 on the season in overtime challenges.
