Card's goal, assist lifts Scots past Cougars 4-0 in key USA South matchup

With four goals off the feet of four different Scots, Maryville College shutout USA South foe Averett University 4-0 on Saturday afternoon on MC's home pitch.

While Maryville's defense limited the Cougars to only a pair of shots early, the Scots ripped nine shots before the intermission with Bret Thomas and Trevor McDonald giving MC a 2-0 lead at the break.

At the 26:13 mark, Thomas dribbled through the top right of the box and placed the eventual game-winner into the lower left of the net past Cougar keeper Austin Bramhall.

Just before the half, Milan Card directed a beautiful corner kick and Trevor McDonald placed a header into the lower left of the net for his first goal of the season.

Maryville's defense remained stingy in the final period once again only allowing two shots on goal.

Ten minutes into the second half, Tristan Skelton lofted a cross captured by Milan Card who struck his first goal of the season mid net to give the Scots a 3-0 advantage.

Three minutes later, at the 58:27 mark, Jace Burchfiel crossed a pass to Aaron Rucker who tapped in the first goal of his junior campaign and his fourth goal as a Scot.

Maryville's Ryan Jorgensen and Luke Wheat earned the combined shutout in net with Jorgensen recording a pair of saves while Wheat thwarted away a Cougar offering.

The win advanced the Scots to 4-2-0 on the season and 3-1-0 in USA South play. Averett falls to 2-5-1 and 0-1-1 in league challenges.

The Scots will prepare to play Piedmont College on Wednesday, September 26th at 6:00 p.m. in Demorest, Georgia.
