The Maryville College men's soccer team dropped a tough USA South road challenge on Wednesday after the Lions of Piedmont College tallied a pair of goals in the second half to defeat the Scots 2-0 in Demorest, Georgia.
Both league frontrunners played to a stalemate in the first half. The Lions out-shot the Scots 5-4 with MC keeper Ryan Jorgensen posting a pair of saves.
Piedmont recorded the eventual game winner in the 47th minute when Colin Owen lifted a cross into the box where David Quiceno headed in his first goal of the season to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage.
Thirteen minutes later, in the 60th minute, Piedmont's Owen placed his second assist of the victory. A touch pass to Cameron Earls allowed a short through ball to be pushed by the keeper from nine-yards out for the final goal of the match. The goal was Earls' 8th of the season.
Maryville could not capitalize on their 8-2 corner kick advantage for the contest with Piedmont out-shooting MC by a final 13-11 rate.
The loss moves Maryville to 4-3 on the season and 3-2 in league play. Piedmont advances to 5-1 on the season and 4-0 in conference action.
Maryville will prepare to host USA South foe Brevard College on Tuesday, October 2 for their next challenge.
