Maryville College earned a 5-0 victory over USA South foe Brevard College on Tuesday night, as Kai Miettinen, Davis Clothier and Jace Burchfield each recorded their first goals while wearing the Orange and Garnet.
Maryville would follow the early aggressive play from Brett Thomas, Milan Card and Miettinen around the net to score first.
Thomas would collect the ball in a scrum at midfield, as he split two defenders with a pass toward the middle. Clouse dribbled twice, before he used a slide pass into the middle. Miettinen launched a shot from 10 yards out, as the low ball slid underneath keeper Patrick Hall for a 1-0 score in the 28th minute.
The Scots took that lead to the break after outshooting the Tornados, 14-4. MC had five shots on goal, as Brevard managed just one.
Maryville had three corners to one.
Miettinen led the way with four shots, as the junior tallied three of the Scots five kicks on frame. Card added three shots with one on goal, as Aaron Rucker had one shot with the final MC shot on goal.
Ryan Jorgensen had one save for Maryville, as Brevard's Hall had four with one goal allowed in the opening stanza.
Maryville would strike again in the 52nd minute. Thomas beat his defender at midfield with a spin move, as he outran him down the left side. Thomas would lift a hard cross to the middle, as Vinyard used a one touch pass to the right with the goalie bearing down on him. Vinyard found Miettinen for his second goal of the night, as the junior found a wide open net from 12 yards out to give MC a 2-0 lead.
Just 1:23 later, the Scots struck again in the 54th minute. Clouse came down the end line on the right side, as he would push a cross to Vinyard in the middle. Hall again came out, as Vinyard would post this one into an open net from 8 yards to give Maryville a commanding 3-0 lead.
MC made it 4-0 in the 77th minute, as Clothier collected his first collegiate goal. Card launched a shot from 15 yards out, as Brevard knocked it down in the box. Clothier settled it, before launching it low from 13 yards out into the middle of the net.
Just 3:01 later, the Scots made it 5-0. Josh Campbell drove the right side of the field, finding Jameson Elmore in the center of the box. Elmore heel kicked it to the left side, as Burchfield launched a hard shot into the lower right side. Elmore and Campbell were both credited for assists in the 80th minute, as the Scots took the win, 5-0.
On the night, Maryville (5-3, 4-2 USA South) outshot Brevard (1-8, 0-5) 36-8. The Scots had 16 shots on frame to just three from the Tornados, as MC had eight corner kicks on the night.
Hall recorded 10 saves for Brevard, as Jackson Pruehs had one. Jorgensen had two saves for Maryville, as Luke Wheat added another.
Miettinen led the way with six shots with four on goal, as he netted a pair of scores. Clouse had two assists for Maryville, as Vinyard had a goal and an assist. Thomas, Elmore and Campbell each added an assist for the Scots, while Clothier and Burchfield added goals.
Vinyard matched Miettinen with six shots and three on frame.
For Brevard, it was David Garrett who had a pair of shots – each on goal.
Maryville will hit the road this weekend, as they travel to Pfeiffer University on Saturday, Oct. 6. First touch for the conference match is slated for 2:00 p.m.
