Strong first half propels Scots past Panthers 3-1

A trio of first half goals and a strong defensive effort allowed Maryville College to defeat USA South Athletic Conference rival LaGrange College 3-1 on Saturday afternoon on MC's home pitch.

The league stalemate was broken in the 12th minute when Chris Fernandez pushed a touch pass to Kai Miettinen about 30-yards out at the top left of the box. The talented senior lofted a blast just above the outstretched Panther keeper, placing his fourth goal of the season into the upper right of the net.

Less than five minutes later, Johnny Rakhmonberdiev directed a through ball and as the keeper attacked the middle of the crease, Trevor McDonald pushed his fourth goal of the season into the middle of the vacant net.

Just before the 28th minute, the reigning United Soccer Coaches Association National Player of the Week-Johnny Rakhmonberdiev- created his eighth assist of the season with a touch pass into the right corner of the goalie crease where Chris Fernandez directed a blast into the lower right glancing off the post for his fourth career goal.

At the half, Maryville outshot the Panthers 19-2 with 10 shots on frame.

MC continued their torrid shooting pace with 29 shots during the entire contest while Gavin Dougherty, Alexander Rigatti, Aaron Rucker, and Matt Hulihan limited LaGrange to only a pair of shots on goal during the entire challenge with their stingy defense.

LaGrange collected a lone goal in the 84th minute when Blake Webb tallied his fifth goal of the season. He directed a blast where MC keeper Mykal Manfred recorded a save, but Webb collected the rebound and found the empty net to make the final score 3-1.

Maryville (8-3, 6-1 USA South) will be back on the pitch on Sunday when they host Centre College in a non-conference match beginning at 2:00 p.m.
