The Maryville College men's soccer program dropped a non-conference match to regional rival Centre College by the score of 2-1 in overtime on Sunday on MC's home pitch.
In a very physical and fast matchup that featured 26 fouls and eight yellow cards, Maryville tallied the initial goal in the first half.
Just before the 24th minute, Trevor McDonald directed a through ball to Austin Vinyard. Vinyard deposited his fourth goal of the season to give MC a 1-0 advantage. The Scots outshot the Colonels 6-5 in the first period.
Centre's offense directed eight second half shots and the Scots kept the visitors scoreless until the 82nd minute. A Maryville foul in the goalie crease gave Centre a point bland penalty kick. Alexander Garuba blasted his eighth goal of the season into the upper right of the net to tie the match.
The regulation match ended in a push before Centre tallied the victory in overtime.
In the 96th minute, the Colonels centered an attack before Nafiz Budeiri took a shot on net from about 35-yard out. The blast went right down the middle of the net, glanced off the MC keeper, and trickled into the net to give Centre the hard-fought road victory. The game-winner was Budeiri's first goal of the season.
The loss moves Maryville to 8-4 on the season while Centre advances to 8-3-1.
The Scots will prepare to host USA South rival Piedmont College on Wednesday, October 9th with a 5:00 first touch.
