Maryville College men's tennis won on Friday night to open Homecoming 2019, as the Scots defeated Johnson University by a score of 6-3.
Friday's victory snapped an 18-match skid for the Scots, as they defeated their cross-town rivals from Knoxville. Maryville won a pair of the three doubles matches, before taking the top four singles bouts for the 6-3 victory.
Kyle Shaver and Austin Smith coupled for a doubles victory, as the duo bolstered singles victories for half of MC's points. Shaver and Smith combined to defeat Stephen Damon and Daniel Overod by a score of 8-1 in doubles competition.
Shaver then defeated Riley Reinhardt as the top-seeded singles match, 6-1, 6-0. Smith took down Malachi Corr, 6-2, 6-3, in second-seeded singles.
Josh Fisher and Matthew Jackson followed suit from Shaver and Smith, claiming the final three points as a duo. They defeated Corr and Cade Crowe in doubles action, 8-3, before Fisher took down Damon, 6-2, 6-2, in singles play. Jackson defeated Crowe in extras, 6-1, 7-5, to earn the Scots first victory since April 10, 2018.
