The Maryville College Scots were tabbed fifth by the USA South Athletic Conference in the annual preseason poll.
Maryville returns all runners from last season's squad, which placed fifth within the conference's championship last fall. MC hosts the USA South Championship this fall.
Berea College, under the direction of Head Coach Shawn Jakubowski, was picked in the USA South Athletic Conference preseason coaches poll to capture the men's cross country title in 2018. In their first season as League members, the Mountaineers claimed the USA South title at last year's championship meet. Berea received 11 of 12 possible first place votes to go along with 121 points. Head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting.
The USA South welcomed Brevard College and Pfeiffer University last season as institutions reclassifying from NCAA Division II status. This year each of their teams are included in the preseason poll and eligible to win the USA South championship at the Conference Meet. Both Brevard and Pfeiffer still will not be eligible to participate in NCAA postseason competition until full NCAA Division III membership is established.
Covenant College finished second in the rankings with 106 points and collected the final remaining first place vote. Piedmont College placed third with 100 points, Methodist University was fourth with 88 points while Maryville College earned 72 points to round out the top-five of the poll.
The men's cross country season gets underway on Friday, August 31st as six teams are in action. Maryville College is one of those squads, as they travel to Lookout Mountain, Ga. for the Covenant College Invitational.
The USA South Cross Country Championship will be held at and hosted by Maryville College in Maryville, Tennessee on Friday, October 26. The men's 8,000-meter race is scheduled to begin at Noon while the women's 6,000-meter race is scheduled to begin at 11:00am.
