Beckett breaks MC's 8K record, Lay sets PR by 30 seconds in Royals Challenge

Maryville College's Daniel Beckett broke his own 8K record on Friday afternoon, as Ryan Lay shaved another 30 seconds off his personal best in the Royals Cross-Country Challenge in Queens, N.C.

In a field of 519 runners – mostly consisting of Division I, Division II and NAIA opponents – the Scots tallied a 48th-place finish.

Against Division III competition, the Scots ranked third, as they were just 17 seconds off the MC 8K team mark in school history. The squad averaged 30:17.64.

Beckett – a senior for the Scots – placed 162nd individually, as he broke the Maryville College record. Beckett broke his own mark by 3 seconds, as he ran the course in a time of 26:31.2.

Lay – also a senior – set a new personal best with a time of 28:16.7. He placed 343rd in the field. Richard Martin ranked 464th with a time of 31:24.4, while Parker Owens ranked 482nd at 32:22.8.

Cooper Harrison ran the course in a time of 32:52.5 for a 486th-place finish, while Lee Parker ran a 34:28.6. Matthew Finstad had a time of 35:22.8.

Joshua Chepkesir of UNC Pembroke won the race individually with a time of 23:22.7. Jack Mastandrea of Charleston (WV) ranked second at 23:41.1, while George McCartney ranked third as an unattached runner.

Lee University (Tenn.) won the race as a team with an average time of 24:34.64. Mount Olive placed second, while Queens ranked third.

This race wraps up the regular season for Maryville College, as they look toward the USA South Championship race in Rocky Mount, N.C. The Championship is slated for Nov. 2.
