Scots conclude fall season with 30th place finish at NCAA regionals

The Maryville College men's cross country squad capped off their 2019 fall campaign with a 30th place finish at the NCAA Division III South/Southeast region cross country championships in Memphis, Tennessee on Saturday.

Emory University claimed the team title with an average pace of 25:19. The Scots' team pace was 30:26 set by five MC finishers.

Jack Whetstone of Emory University earned individual honors with a 24:49 8K effort. Maryville's top finisher was senior Daniel Beckett. In his collegiate race finale, Maryville's 8K school-record holder posted a 26:55 effort good for 71st place.

MC senior Ryan Lay finished 158th among 239 regional harriers with a 28:32 individual pace. Junior Richard Martin ran at a 30:06 clip for a 209th place finish while freshman Parker Owens completed the challenge in 32:47. Maryville's final scorer was sophomore Cooper Harrison who took on the challenging course in 33:44.

"I am extremely proud of this team," stated Coach Tyson Murphy. "Daniel Beckett will go down as one of the most successful and decorated cross country runners in MC history while fellow senior Ryan Lay achieved many personal best efforts throughout his career and saved his best season for his senior year. Richard, Parker, and Cooper have established a firm foundation for the future of the program to continue to be successful in the future."
