Hogg's homers not enough against Meredith

The Maryville College dropped two USA South Athletic Conference games on Sunday afternoon, as Meredith's Taylor Jackson pitched two complete games for the Avenging Angels.

Maryville fell in the first game, 9-5, before four first-inning errors proved costly in a 5-0 second game.

The Scots' Caitlyn Hogg led the way in the two games for MC, posting a 3-for-5 day with three runs and four RBIs. Hogg ended Taylor's no-hitter with a solo home run to center field in the fifth inning, before blasting a three-run shot in the bottom of the seventh.

The left fielder amassed three of MC's eight hits on the day, while being walked two times and hit by a pitch.

Meredith struck first, as Amanda White and Eran Artigues both found RBI singles to give the Avenging Angels a 2-0 lead.

The Scots would strike back in the bottom of the inning behind a Meredith error. Hogg was hit by a pitch, before advancing to second on a wild pitch and third on a ground. Megan Mihaliak walked, before stealing second. A throwing error on the pickoff attempt allowed Hogg to score from third for a 2-1 Avenging Angel lead.

Brittany Bucklin tripled to down the right field line, before scoring on a wild pitch in the top of the third. Back-to-back RBI doubles in top of the fifth by Artigues and Maria Annunziata was followed by an RBI single by Courtney Saunders gave the Avenging Angels a 6-1 advantage.

Hogg ended Taylor's no-hitter vie in the bottom of the fifth with her solo shot to center.

However, Meredith would strike again, in the top of the seventh with a two-RBI single by Annunziata. Alyssa D'Arco added an RBI single to left to give Meredith a 9-1 lead.

Hogg added her second home run of the ball game with a three-run shot to the scoreboard in left field for a final of 9-5.

Hogg led the way going 2-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBIs. Brand was 2-for-4, while Jessica McMahan went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Meredith was led by Annunziata who finished the day 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. The Avenging Angels had three other hitters go 3-for-4, as Artigues (two RBIs, two runs), White (two runs, one RBI) and Bucklin (three runs) accomplished the feat as well.

A four-error first inning for the Scots proved costly in the second game of the day, as the Avenging Angels added four runs in the top of the first.

Artigues had an RBI single in the top of the fifth to add an insurance run in the 5-0 win for the Avenging Angels.

Kazdyn Cooper went 2-for-3, while Hogg was 1-for-2 with two walks in the game.

White led Meredith with a 3-for-4 outing, posting two RBIs and two runs scored. She was 6-for-8 on the day with four runs scored and three RBIs in the series.

Maryville falls to 3-9 overall and 2-4 within the USA South. Meredith advances to 11-3, 5-1.

The Scots will travel to Covenant College on Wednesday evening for a double header beginning at 2 p.m. Maryville will host Transylvania at 2 p.m. on Thursday, before hosting Huntingdon on Saturday and Salem on Sunday in two double headers beginning at noon.
