Smith's 14 strikeouts lead Scots past No. 13 Berry College, 3-1

The Maryville College Scots toppled the No. 13 ranked Berry College Vikings in the opening game of the day on Wednesday, as MC followed Katlyn Smith for a 3-1 victory.

Smith held the nationally ranked program to only a trio of hits on the day, striking out a 14 of the 27 batters she faced.

"I know Katlyn had this game circled on her schedule," Head Coach Leah Kelley said. "You know, they beat us last year, 1-0, and that's kind of been the saying all year. '1-to-nothing, 1-to-nothing. We owe them.' Katlyn's been preparing since last year for this game. She pitched outstanding for us. This is a team that I've missed. Katlyn pitched phenomenal, and then our offense did what they were supposed to do. Their pitcher was really good. We battled in the box, and that's something we've been missing this year – committing in the box. Katlyn set the tone for us."

The sophomore hurler allowed just one run and three walks, as she struck out each of the Vikings' lineup at least once. She tossed 119 pitches – 81 of those for strikes – in earning her third victory of the season.

Christina White – playing shortstop – was also a crucial key. The junior went 2-for-4, while having a hand in each of MC's three runs. She had a pair of runs scored and an RBI in handing Berry their first loss of the year.

"She's really stepped up in that lead off position. She's such a competitor. Big players step up in big games. She's done that for us. She's stepped up in a big role, and I'm excited to see how she keeps competing and setting the tone for us."

She set that tone early for Maryville in the bottom of the first inning. White singled up the middle to lead off the game, as the speedster stole second. A groundout advanced the shortstop to third, as Alexus Murray's RBI single through the right side gave the Scots a 1-0 advantage.

The Scots added a pair more in to bottom of the fourth. Ashton Hayden singled through the left side on the first pitch, before White's first-pitch double to left-center scored the speedy center fielder from first. Taylor Campbell followed White's lead with an RBI double of her own to the warning track in right-center, as the Scots took a 3-0 lead to the fifth.

Berry College found their first run of the day on their third hit of the game. Bayleigh Masterson took a 1-1 count long, but the ball sailed foul down the left-field line. On the next pitch, she straightened it out with a solo home run to left, 3-1.

Maryville College (5-2) followed White's performance with a 2-for-4 effort by Campbell. The second baseman added an RBI, while Murray went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Hayden was 1-for-3 with a run. Morgan Brewer was 1-for-1, while Essence Stramber also added a hit.

Berry College (5-1) saw Masterson lead the way with a 2-for-3 effort. Her home run was the only RBI and run for the Vikings on the day.
