Maryville College's offense found its rhythm on Friday afternoon, as the Scots scattered 14 hits in a 12-2 win over Methodist University in five innings.
MC put together a huge six-run second inning to regain the lead in the non-conference game, as Christen Torres used a three-RBI, bases-clearing triple to give Maryville an 8-2 lead. The Scots wouldn't look back, earning the program's seventh win of the 2019 campaign.
Maryville College struck first in the top of the opening inning. White drew a leadoff walk, as the speedy outfield promptly stole second. A Reid Ballard RBI single through the left side plated White for a 1-0 Scots' advantage early.
Methodist University would answer, however, in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Monarchs were aided by a Scots' error to load the bases after a walk and a single. Bri Canton drew a bases-loaded RBI walk to score Blythe Best for the unearned run, before Lindsey Champion followed suit to plate Samantha Jacobs. Maryville's Katlyn Smith struck out a pair of Methodist batters to end the threat with the bases juiced.
The Scots would explode in the top of the second, however, plating six runs. An Essence Strambler double to left-center and a Sarah Gordon walk put a pair on, as Amaya Goodloe's single to second loaded the bases. White and Alexus Murray earned back-to-back RBI via walk to score Strambler and pinch-runner Grace Gordon. Campbell found an RBI with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Goodloe, before Ballard drew a walk to load the bases for the third time in the inning for the Scots. Christen Torres would empty them with a bases-clearing triple to right field, as her trio of RBI gave MC a 7-2 lead going to the third.
A two-out rally gave the Scots their eighth run of the game. Goodloe singled through the right side before stealing second. White plated the right fielder with an RBI single to left-center, as the Scots led 8-2 through three innings.
The Scots would continue their scoring with a pair of runs in the fourth. Campbell led off the inning with a solo home run – her first blast of the season – before Ballard could reach scoring position on a single and a wild pitch. A Strambler RBI single up the middle would bring home Ballard for MC's 10th run of the game.
A Campbell single and a Torres double down the left-field line put two runners in scoring position in the top of the fifth. Joliff – a pinch hitter – laced a two-out, two-RBI double to right-center to score both Torres and Campbell for a 12-2 win in five innings.
Maryville (7-4) was led by Torres who went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run. Campbell was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI with her home run blast. Ballard went 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI, while Strambler was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
White was 1-for-1 with two runs, two RBI, two stolen bases and two walks, while Goodloe went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Joliff was 1-for-1 with a pair of runs batted in.
Smith picked up the win in the circle to move to 5-1 overall. Smith allowed just one hit and one earned run, as she struck out 10 Monarchs. The sophomore had eight walks on the day.
Methodist (6-11) found their only hit in Jacobs who went 1-for-3 with a run. Best also scored a run, while Canton and Champion posted RBI.
