Maryville College remained perfect in USA South Athletic Conference play Wednesday afternoon, as they toppled Covenant College, 9-0, in five innings.
The victory marks the third-straight complete-game shutout for pitcher Katlyn Smith, as the Scots have move their conference mark to 13-0 overall. The sophomore hurler has given up just four hits over that span.
Maryville's offensive attack also shined, as they posted 10 hits including Taylor Campbell's seventh homer of the 2019 campaign with a fourth-inning, three-run shot just past the foul pole in left. Campbell was 2-for-3 with four RBI and a run, as both Morgan Brewer and Casey Joliff went perfect 2-for-2.
The game went scoreless until the bottom of the third inning, as Brewer's leadoff triple to right put a runner on. Joliff promptly plated the junior with single to short up the middle. Pinch runner Amaya Goodloe stole second, taking third on a groundout. Alexus Murray scored the speedster with a squeeze bunt single, as Murray stole both second and third. Campbell laced an RBI single down the left field line to push Murray across for a 3-0 Maryville lead.
A leadoff double, four-straight singles and Campbell's three-run blast added five runs to MC's total in the bottom of the fourth. Sarah Gordon's leadoff double to left and Christen Torres' single to the pitcher put runners on the corners. Brewer found her second-straight hit with an RBI single up the middle to plate pinch runner Grace Gordon, before Joliff followed suit with an RBI single to score pinch runner Ashleigh Geary. Ashton Hayden's single through the left side loaded the bases, as Murray used a sacrifice fly to plate Brewer. Campbell's big swing scored both Hayden and Joliff for a 9-0 Scots lead.
Smith closed to door in the top of the fifth to earn MC's 13th-straight USA South game of the season.
Maryville (21-8, 13-0 USA South) was led by Campbell's effort, as Brewer went 2-for-2 with a triple, two runs and an RBI. Joliff was also 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run, while Murray went 1-for-2 with a pair of RBI and a run. Hayden was 1-for-2 with a run, as Sarah Gordon and Torres each added hits. Geary, Grace Gordon, and Goodloe scored a run each.
Smith went a complete five innings, allowing just two hits. She struck out six – not allowing a walk – to move to 15-3 on the year.
Covenant College (11-19, 6-7) saw Faith Manning and Shelby Ralston record the only hits of the game for the Scots.
