Maples' 17, Hawn's 16 not enough as Scots fall to Lynx 69-56

The Maryville College women's basketball program dropped a 69-56 decision at the hands of Rhodes College in the opening round of the 2017 Rhodes College Classic in Memphis, Tennessee on Saturday evening.


Maryville's Madison Maples and Rachel Hawn deposited 14 of the Scots 19 points in the first quarter leading MC to a 19-17 first quarter advantage.


Through seven lead changes, Rhodes claimed the second quarter out-scoring the Scots 22-14 by out-rebounding MC 24-17. Maples finished the first half with 15 points while Hawn was 5-for-7 from the floor with 10 points and five rebounds.


A Haley Talbott three-pointer opened the second half, but Rhodes posted a 9-0 run in the first four minutes before Libby Gardner connected on another trey making the score 48-39. Baskets by Hawn, Elsa Eckenrod, Lauren Biliter, and Maples helped MC post an 8-0 run with a minute to go in the third quarter, but the Lynx dropped a pair of buckets closing the quarter with a 56-47 lead.


Rhodes combined their 4-0 run at the end of the third quarter with a 6-0 run beginning the final period to give the hosts a 62-47 advantage. The Lynx lead went as high as 15 before the tournament host settled for a 13-point victory.


Rhodes (5-1) Was paced by Alyssa Owens' 16 points on 6-of 15 shooting. Lindsey Whiteside and Allie Young each posted 14 points with Young recording a team-high eight rebounds. Erin Deery added 10 points to secure the Lynx win.


Maryville (1-5) was led by Madison Maples' game-high 17 points. Maples went 6-of-11 from the floor and 3-of-7 from beyond the arc. Rachel Hawn finished with 16 points on 8-of-13 shooting while grabbing a game-high nine rebounds. Libby Gardner dropped a trio of treys for nine points while dishing out a team-high five assists.


The Scots will challenge NCA Division III foe Hendrix College on Sunday to conclude the Rhodes Classic. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 p.m. EST.
