The Maryville College women's basketball team opened their 2018-19 season at home against No.23 Emory & Henry College on Wednesday evening in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium. The Wasps defeated the Scots 61-49.
E&H used a 50% shooting effort in the first quarter and a 56% shooting effort in the third quarter to establish an 18-point advantage, but the Scots fought back and whittled the lead to 10 before the Wasps pulled away in the final minutes.
Emory & Henry's Sydney McKinney paced all scorers with a double-double of 21 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Peyton Williams and Laken Blackburn each tossed in 10 points for the Wasps. Taylor Blevins was also strong on the boards with nine rebounds.
Maryville's offense was led by Libby Gardner's 12 points. The guard was 6-for-7 from the free throw line while also grabbing five rebounds. Kelley Wandell was strong in the post with eight points and a team-high nine rebounds. Klaire Varney added eight points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals for a consistent effort for MC.
"I learned that my kids are going to fight," stated Coach Travillian. "We have a brand-new team after graduating six key contributors from last year's squad. To go out here and go toe-to-toe with a nationally ranked program this early in the season is encouraging."
The Scots (0-1) will travel to The University of the South on Tuesday, November 20th for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference tip-off.
