Maryville College's Libby Gardner exploded for 17 points to help the Scots defeat Ferrum College 66-54 in Ferrum, Virginia on Monday afternoon.
Maryville outpaced the Panthers 36-24 at the half with a strong team effort. Gardner posted 11 points at the break with a 4-for-6 shooting effort. Erin Beasley added six points before the intermission.
Beasley tallied five points, along with Klaire Varney, in the third quarter to help MC pull away with a 57-42. The Scots posted 21 points in the stanza on 61% shooting (8-for-13) including a 3-for-7 effort from beyond the arc.
With contributions from the entire roster, Maryville finished the final quarter with the tough 12-point road non-conference victory.
Ferrum (3-7) was paced by Jessy Nichols' 16 points. Maggie Self and Jacy Marvin each added nine points while Courtney Martin pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.
Maryville (3-6) had three players finish with double digits in scoring. Libby Gardner finished 7-for-10 from the field including a trio of treys for a game-high 17 points. Klaire Varney and Erin Beasley each added a pair of three-pointers. Varney finished with 12 points and a team-high six rebounds while Beasley tossed in 11 points. Ten Scots scored during the challenge combining for a 47% shooting effort (25-for-53) from the floor.
"This was a good win for our team. We had great contributions from our entire roster, and we were unselfish with the ball," stated Head Coach Darrin Travillian. "I liked our defensive effort, and we are making strides on the boards."
The Scots will remain in Ferrum, Virginia to challenge Averett University on Tuesday. The non-conference challenge against the Cougars is scheduled for a 1:00 tip-off.
