Varney's double-double not enough as Scots fall to Emory 68-52

The Maryville College women's basketball team fell to 4-7 on the season with a 68-52 non-conference loss to Emory University on Tuesday evening in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium.


The Scots kept pace with the Eagles in the first half claiming the first quarter 14-12 on 33% shooting from the floor. Emory outscored MC 16-13 in the second period with Molly Weiss coming off the bench for the Eagles and posting 11 points on a 4-of-6 shooting effort that included a pair of treys.


At the half, Maryville only trailed 28-27.


The Eagles took a commanding lead in the third quarter when Ashley Oldshue went 3-for-3 from the floor for eight points. MC tried to keep pace with Elsa Eckenrod dropping seven points on a 3-for-5 shooting effort that included a three-pointer. Emory shot an amazing 54% (8-for 15) while pulling away.


Emory closed out the challenge with a 58% shooting effort in the final period (7-for-12) that included a trio of three-pointers. MC's Libby Gardner fought to the end with five points, going a perfect 2-for-2 as the game's final buzzer sounded.


Emory was paced by Ashley Oldshue's 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Azzairia Jackson-Sherrod added 13 points while Molly Weiss tossed in 13 points off the bench.


Maryville saw Klaire Varney post a double-double with 15 points while grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds. Kelley Wandell had a near double-double with 10 points and seven rebounds. Libby Gardner and Elsa Eckenrod each collected nine points with Gardner dishing out six assists.


Maryville, 2-1 in USA South Athletic Conference play this season, will resume their conference schedule on Saturday, January 5th at Agnes Scott College. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m. in Atlanta.
