The Maryville College women's basketball team dropped their first challenge of the season with a 72-51 loss at the hands of Oglethorpe University at the Lee's Recipe/ Hampton Inn Classic in Danville, Kentucky Friday evening.
Maryville's junior guard Klaire Varney went 6-for-14 from the floor for a team-high 16 points while bringing down six rebounds.
The Scots jumped out to a 20-18 advantage in the first quarter but a 1-for-14 shooting effort in the second stanza gave the Stormy Petrels a 29-24 halftime lead. Oglethorpe used a 19-for-36 second half shooting effort (53%) and a strong 27-9 rebound advantage to pull away from the Scots in the second half.
Oglethorpe (4-1) was paced by Sydni Donovan's game-high 21 points. She added nine boards and four blocked shots. Savannah LeGate added 14 points and eight rebounds off the bench.
MC (3-1) added to Varney's consistency with Courtney Carruthers nine points. Elsa Eckenrod deposited eight points off the bench while Kelley Wandell hauled down a team-high eight rebounds in her first action of the season. Abbi Joseph and Shelby Hix each tossed in seven points as the Scots shot only 29% from the floor on the evening.
Maryville will take on tournament host Centre College on Saturday in Danville. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 p.m.
