The Maryville College women's basketball squad fell in the championship challenge at the 2019 Pat Deacon Classic in Lexington, Kentucky with a 68-56 loss at the hands of Southern Virginia University on Saturday evening.
Southern Virginia used a run in the third quarter and pulled away in the final quarter to earn the 12-point victory.
Maryville's stifling defense held the Knights to nine first quarter points and only an 11-point effort in the second stanza.
Following a 33-20 halftime advantage, Southern Virginia started the second half on an 11-0 run before Libby Gardner deposited a three-pointer at the six-minute mark making the score 36-34. A Klaire Varney layup kept the Scots in the lead 38-36 at the five-minute mark. Following a media timeout, SVU took a 39-38 lead on a Katie Garrish layup with three minutes remaining in the third quarter. A zone defensive stop and a three-pointer by Elsa Eckenrod gave MC a 41-39 advantage into the final two minutes of the third quarter. Shelby Hix connected on a trey extending the Scots' lead to 44-41, but the Knights closed out the quarter on a 5-0 run including a buzzer-beater to take a 46-44 lead into the final period.
The Knights pulled away in the fourth quarter with 22 points and a 53-percents shooting effort from the floor while the Scots could only post a dozen points on 4-of-20 shooting (20-percent) from the floor.
Maryville finished the challenge hitting 20-of-63 shots from the floor (31-percent) while going 7-of 28 (25-percent) from beyond the arc.
Southern Virginia (6-1) was paced by Katie Garrish's double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds. Savanna Christensen tallied 19 points while grabbing seven boards while Sophie Wright added 11 points.
The Scots will prepare for their home debut on Wednesday, December 4th when they host USA South foe Brevard College at 6:00 p.m. in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
