Maryville College's Klaire Varney has been named the USA South women's basketball Player of the Week following her All-Tournament effort at the Pat Deacon Classic in Lexington, Kentucky this weekend.
The Crossville, Tennessee junior guard averaged 20.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 5.0 steals and 3.5 assists per game as the Scots posted a 1-1 record last week. In a 75-67 win over tenth-ranked Transylvania, Varney poured in a career-high 32 points with nine rebounds, eight steals and six steals. In a 68-56 loss to Southern Virginia, Varney totaled eight points, six rebounds, two steals and one assist.
"I was really excited to see Klaire's effort against a top-10 opponent in Transylvania on Friday night," stated Maryville College Head Coach Darrin Travillian. "It was one of the better all-around performances I have seen from her since I have been here. She took the game over and the rest of the team fed off of her energy and effort."
Varney is averaging 17.9 points per game on the season while pacing the Scots with 6.9 rebounds per challenge.
Maryville (5-2) opens their USA South schedule on Wednesday, December 4th as the Scots host Brevard College at 6:00 p.m. in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
