The Maryville College women's soccer program opened the 2017 season hosting Howard Payne (Texas) in the MC Invitational. Due to poor weather, the action was shifted to the Sansom Sports Complex in Knoxville. Throughout a rain soaked day, the Scots and Yellow Jackets concluded a day of NCAA Division III soccer with a 1-1 push.
The pair battled to a scoreless tie despite Maryville out-shooting their opponent 10-1 in the first half. Yellow Jacket keeper Alexandra Thompson recorded three saves I the opening half.
At the 54-minute mark in the second half, HPU's Rachel Crane attacked a free-kick on the left-side of the box. Lesly Garcia slipped a shot by MC keeper Rachel Taylor for her first goal of the season, giving Howard Payne a 1-0 advantage.
With shots and attacks being almost even in the closing period and time winding down, Maryville's Shannon Reagan dribbled through the left side and stuck a shot into the lower-right corner of the goal in the 71st minute.
A pair of overtime periods could not produce a golden goal as each squad's defense tightened. Keepers Taylor and Thompson turned away a combined four shot attempts in the extra stanzas.
The Maryville College Invitational for the women will conclude on Saturday when Howard Payne challenges Piedmont at 3:00 p.m. and Maryville will host Birmingham Southern at 7:00 p.m.
