Hill's game-winner lifts Scots past Covenant 2-0 in USA South action

Lexie Hill's game-winning goal in the second half gave Maryville College a key USA South Western Division victory over Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Georgia on Thursday evening.

The first half saw Maryville with consistent offensive pressure on the Covenant defense maintaining possession the majority of the first half. MC posted an 8-2 shot advantage. Covenant keeper Rachel Lemay turned away four shots on goal that included a pair of attempts by Kara Tubb as well as solo shots by Bailey Sipos and Hannah Clothier. Abbie Anderson and Lexi Hill each had solid looks blocked by a strong Covenant backline of defense. MC went to the intermission tied 0-0 while leading in corner kicks 5-0 at the half.

The second half began with Maryville attacking the Covenant net on four occasions in the first nine minutes. Shots by Shannon Reagan and Sipos were thwarted by Covenant's Lemay, but Lexie Hill split a pair of defenders on the right side and blasted a shot that hit the top of the crossbar and trickled into the net for her 5th goal of the season. The goal in the 54th minute put Maryville up 1-0.

Just ten minutes later, Reagan took a through ball into the right side and was fouled in the box by Covenant's Grace Herring. Reagan took the proceeding penalty kick and tickled the twine for her 16th goal of the season to give MC a 2-0 advantage.

The final 26 minutes was a battle of field possession with MC's defense holding strong.

MC Head Coach Pepe Fernandez was happy with his team's effort on the road. "This was a fantastic team effort with a memorable goal by a freshman. Even though it will not show up in the stats senior Kara Tubb played her best game of her career winning headers, key tackles, and covering every blade of grass on the pitch with her tireless hustle."

Maryville finished with 18 shots on the evening with the host Scots taking nine. MC placed 11 shots on goal with Covenant keeper Lemay recording nine saves. Maryville's keeper Abbey Coleman earned the win in net with five saves.

Bailey Sipos led MC's offensive attack with six shots while Shannon Reagan added four.

The win advances Maryville to 12-2-2 on the season and 5-0-1 in USA South action. Covenant falls to 9-6 on the year and 4-2 in league challenges.

Maryville will finish their regular season schedule on Saturday when they host LaGrange College during Homecoming. First touch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on MC's home pitch.
