Maryville College wrapped up the Bicentennial Kick-off Classic on Saturday evening, as the Scots defeated Pfeiffer University, 5-3.
MC went a perfect 2-0 in women's competition this week – the only women's school to do so – while outscoring opponents, 10-3.
The Scots had a pair of five-goal matches, as the Scots' Hannah Clothier was tabbed the tournament's MVP. Shannon Reagan, Taylor Frizen, Alyssa Kral, Kelly Allen, Jenna Clothier and Macy Lindsey were tabbed All-Tournament in the two-day event.
On Saturday, five different Scots tallied goals in the victory.
Pfeiffer University struck first in the seventh minute of the first half. The Falcons took a goal kick, booting it to midfield. Cayci Eaton gathered it at the midline, lifting a pass down the left side. Kelsy Esquivel made one defender miss, placing a left-footer into the upper right of the net just out of the reach of Abbey Coleman. Pfeiffer led 1-0 at the 6:30 mark.
Maryville would not trail long, however, as it took them just 20 seconds to find the equalizer. Lindsey took the center kick following the goal, passing it out to the right side of the field to Frizen. She side-footed a pass back to Lindsey in the middle, as the freshman lofted a pass into the box beyond the Falcon defense. That lob found a streaking Reagan who went one-on-one with goalkeeper Madison Riddle for the equalizer in the seventh minute.
Maryville College took the lead in the 34th minute, as Kelsey Green took control of the ball. Green battled two defenders, driving nearly 30 yards into the Pfeiffer box. The Knoxville, Tenn., native went one-on-one with the keeper, placing a low ball into the right of the net. At the 33:27 mark, Maryville led 2-1.
Pfeiffer again tied the score in the 43rd minute. The Falcons used four passes from left to right as they went down the field, before Kayla Blankenship found the ball at the top-right corner of the box. Eaton played Blankenship's pass off her chest, bouncing it once off the turf. Eaton spun and right-footed a low shot into the left side, tying the score at 2-all where it would remain at the half.
Maryville took a 3-2 lead in the 62nd minute, as Jenna Clothier scored her second free kick of the tournament. The junior from Murfreesboro, Tenn., clanked the try off the crossbar and in for the lead at 61:11.
MC's fourth goal came at the 76:21 mark, as Savannah Lickel split a pair of defenders at the top of the box. She drove to face the goalie one-on-one, netting a low roller with her right foot for the 4-2 advantage.
Reagan stole the ball from the Falcons near the top of the box, driving to the middle. She dished a pass to the top right corner, finding Lindsey Lewallan. Lewallan used a hard, right-footed kick to sail the ball over the Falcon keeper, making the score 5-2 in the 79th minute.
Pfeiffer made one last run at in the 82nd minute, as Esquivel found her second goal of the match. The goal made the final 5-3.
Reagan, who had a goal and an assist with one shot on goal, led Maryville College (2-0). Green, Lickel, Lewallan and Jenna Clothier each had one shot on frame, making them count with a goal apiece.
Coleman picked up her second win in goal, allowing three goals with two saves in a full 90 minutes.
Pfeiffer (1-1) saw Esquival post two shots on goal, scoring both to lead the Falcons.
Maryville will have a week off before traveling to Lynchburg College on Saturday, Sept. 7. First touch is slated for noon in Virginia.
