Maryville College advanced to the USA South Semifinals on Saturday, as the Scots knocked off Methodist University, 4-0.
With the victory, the Scots earn the right to host the remainder of the conference tournament, which will be held Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8-9.
The Scots followed a strong performance by Taylor Frizen, as the sophomore tallied a pair of assists and a goal in the elimination match. Shannon Reagan – the USA South Player of the Year – added a goal and an assist of her own to advance.
Maryville struck first in the eighth minute of play. Reagan took a cross from First Team All-Conference honoree Frizen from the right side. The senior deposited her 20th goal of the 2019 campaign with a right-footed one timer from point blank. The goal gave Maryville a 1-0 lead at the 7:49 mark.
Just 6:06 later, the Scots struck again. This time, Jenna Clothier found an unassisted strike, as the junior deposited a free-kick score. The shot from 5 yards outside the right corner of the box to give MC a 2-nil lead at the 13:55 point of the first half.
Methodist looked to get a goal back with just over 13 minutes left. Maryville's defense pressed forward, leaving a wide gap. The Monarchs' Laura Harris launched a 45-yard shot, as it deflected off the front of the crossbar. The Monarchs followed that with a pair of corner kicks, as MC's defense held them at bay.
The score remained 2-0 at the half, as the Scots held a 12-5 advantage on shots. MC had a trio of shots on frame with two of those scoring, while the Monarchs managed two of their five shots on target.
Less than three minutes into the second half, Reagan would repay the favor to Frizen. Reagan lofted a long pass to Frizen, who dribbled to the left inside the box. She lofted a high shot to the upper-right corner of the net for her 13th score of the season. Maryville led 3-0 in the 48th minute.
The Scots made it a 4-0 score with just more than 12 minutes remaining in the match. Frizen added her second assist of the match, as Emilie Guigou found her first goal of the season. Frizen crossed it in, as Guigou went one-on-one with the keeper for the score.
Maryville (13-6) outshot the Monarchs, 28-10. MC had 10 shots on frame to four from Methodist.
Keeper Abbey Coleman earned the win in goal, advancing to 12-4. The junior turned away each of the four shots she faced to preserve the shutout for MC.
Frizen had four shots – each of them on frame – with a goal and a pair of assists. Reagan had three shots with a goal and an assist, as Clothier added seven shots and a goal. Guigou scored on the only shot she had on the afternoon.
