Smith, strong hitting leads Scots to sweep

The Maryville College Volleyball squad earned dual sweeps on Friday night, as Maryville earned 3-0 victories over the Scotties of Agnes Scott and the Emory & Henry Wasps.

Maryville saw freshman Madison Smith lead the way, posting 33 assists, three digs and three kills in the Scots' sweeps.

Maryville took the first match over Agnes Scott by the scores of 25-17, 26-24, 25-13, as the Scots hit at a .281 clip for the match.

Maryville's Madison Coker tallied 11 kills to go along with three digs, as the senior hitter had a .450 kill percentage on the evening.

Sophia del Campo had seven kills, and six digs, while Rachel Kozemko tallied six kills, eight digs, an assist and an ace.

Smith, along with fellow freshman Taylor Youell had 17 digs each, as Youell totaled a double-double behind 10 digs. Kaitlyn Flickinger had a team-high 14 digs to go along with five assists.

The Scotties saw Paige Heck with nine kills, while Bonnie Derks and Anna Tomkins each found five. Tomkins had 17 assists to lead Agnes Scott, as Tomkins led the squad with 14 digs. Bella Kammerer had 11 digs on the evening.

The Scots took the second match of the day with scores of 25-20, 26-24, 25-18, defeating the Wasps in three straight.

Smith again led Maryville with 16 digs and a kill. Nia Haller found a team-high 10 kills, while Kozemko added eight kills and seven digs. Mary Kate White had five kills of her own.

Youell followed her double-double night with 11 assists, three digs, a service ace and two kills, as Flickinger led the Scots with 12 digs and three assists. Stephanie Gleason also had nine digs.

Emory & Henry saw Tristen Pennington tally nine kills, 10 assists, five digs and a service ace to lead the wasps, as Ali Singleton had six kills. Sarah Scott had 13 assists to lead Emory & Henry, while Emily Hinshaw had eight digs.

Emory & Henry falls to 9-10 on the year, while Agnes Scott goes to 6-8.

The win moves Maryville College to a 9-6 mark, as they prepare to face USA South Athletic Conference foes Ferrum College and Averett University tomorrow at Covenant College. The Scots hold a perfect 6-0 conference mark, looking to keep their streak of 48-straight regular season conference wins alive.

Those games are slated for 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
