The Maryville College Scots fought off deficits in the first two sets, as MC earned back-to-back 3-0 sweeps with a shutout over Johnson University on Saturday afternoon.
After the Scots defeated Agnes Scott College, 3-0, earlier MC posted a 25-21, 25-22, 25-20 victory over the Royals in their second match of the day.
MC's Brianne Sidner tallied a near double-double with 14 kills and nine digs. Sidner found her swing for a .241 hitting percentage, as she posted three aces and a block.
Johnson University jumped to a 3-0 start, as they extended that to a 8-2 lead early on. Dejane Hester-Taylor and Sidner found two kills each, as MC scored seven straight for a 9-8 lead.
The two teams battled back-and-forth to an 18-all score, as Maryville would score five of the next six for a 23-18 advantage. Sidner posted a trio of kills in the rally, as the Scots would take a 25-21 win in set one.
Johnson would again jump to an early lead, 11-7, in the second set of the day. Kills from Hester-Taylor, Meredith Bonee and Arin Wyttenbach aided the Scots in scoring four straight to knot things at 11-all.
Tied at 13, Johnson scored five of the next six on what included a service ace and a Cheyanne Zorn kill for an 18-14 lead. The Royals took a 21-19 lead on a MC service error, before kills from Sidner and Madison Wilkerson coupled with a pair of service aces from Sidner to make the score 23-21.
Kills by Hester-Taylor and Bonee gave the Scots a 25-22 set-two victory.
Maryville jumped out quick in the third set and never looked back. The Scots tallied 16 kills in the set, as they ended the match with a .203 hitting percentage.
Maryville (4-5) saw Hester-Taylor follow Sidner's performance with 10 kills and a dig of her own. The junior hit .529 for the match in the sweep.
Bonee neared a triple-double with 15 assists, nine digs and eight kills. Taylor Youell had 22 assists for Maryville, as MacKenzie Marcrum led the defense with 16 digs. Sidner, Youell and Bonee each had nine digs, as Madison Wilkerson posted eight.
Johnson University (9-3) was led by Danielle Quesinberry's nine-kill, seven-dig effort. Sydney Cook has 23 assists for the Royals, as she had a double-double with 16 digs. Brianna Connaster had 12 digs, while Zorn had nine.
Maryville College will return to action tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 23. The Scots travel to Emory, Va., as they face off with Guilford College and Emory & Henry College. First serve is slated for 3:30 p.m.
