Scots advance to USA South Quarterfinals behind stellar defense, 15 aces

Maryville College posted a 3-0 victory over Agnes Scott on Tuesday night, as MC advances to the USA South Athletic Conference Quarterfinals.

The Scots will take on Huntingdon College tonight in the second round of the conference tournament with a first serve at 8:30 p.m. EST, 7:30 p.m. CST. Live video can be followed HERE.

Maryville hit .224 as a squad against the Scotties, as a defensive effort held Agnes Scott to negative hitting percentage at -0.041.

The Scots had 15 service aces in the match, as they won in straight sets, 25-15, 25-11, 25-19.

Maryville scored the first eight points of the opening set, as Dejane Hester-Taylor recorded three kills in that stint. Allison Botts had an ace in the rally to set an early tone.

Meredith Bonee, Saidee McDaniel, Madison Wilkerson, Lauren Espinal, Brianne Sidner and Botts tallied kills in the set, as Yasmeen Chan had an ace. Arin Wyttenbach's kill from Botts would end the set in a 25-15 first-set win.

The Scots again had a key rally to open the second set. MC posted each of the first 13 points, as Taylor Youell recorded five aces in the 13-point run.

The Scots had nine total aces in the second set, as Sidner tallied three-straight. McDaniel added the final to take the set, 25-11.

Maryville hit .227 for the set, as they held the Scotties to a negative .222 hitting effort in the second frame.

Kelley Wandell, Hester-Taylor, Wyttenbach, Sidner, Wilkerson, Espinal had kills, as the Scots added aces from Hester-Taylor, Chan and Sidner in the back-and-fourth third set. Maryville took the victory, 25-19, to advance.

Maryville (17-9) was led by Youell who had 12 assists and five aces. Hester-Taylor had eight kills at a .500 clip to go with three digs, a block and an ace, while Sidner had a near double-double with nine digs, eight kills and four aces. Espinal had five kills and three digs.

Nadia St. Thomas had nine assists and a trio of digs. Botts and Mackenzie Marcrum had double-digit digs for MC, as Botts had 11. Marcrum added 10 in her defensive effort.

Agnes Scott (5-24) saw Tiara White record five kills, while Bella Kammerer had nine assists and nine digs.
