Box Score The Christopher Newport Captains took advantage of a poor first half by the Maryville College women's basketball team and held on to snap the Scots' 13 game win streak by the score of 65-60 on Sunday afternoon in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
Maryville connected on only 5-of-27 shots (18%) before the intermission, allowing the Captains to take a 28-16 lead into the half.
The Scots outscored CNU 44-37 in the closing period but could not close the gap as the Captains hit 59% of their shots in the second half to secure the win. CNU's 70% free-throw shooting (21-for-30) kept the Scots from gaining any ground throughout the closing minutes.
Christopher Newport (14-2, 7-2 USA South) was led by Tia Perry's 14 points. Camry Green went 4-for-5 from the floor and 5-for-7 from the free throw line for 13 points while grabbing a game-high nine rebounds. Nicole Mitchell added a dozen points to help the Captains snap a two game losing streak.
Maryville (14-2, 8-1 USA South) was paced by Janell Menard's 20 point effort. Menard connected on 4-of-10 treys while hauling down six rebounds. Kiera Payne went 7-for-13 from the field for 19 points while crashing the boards for a game-high nine rebounds. Mackenzie Puckett tossed in 10 points and seven rebounds to help the Scots. Tayler Smith added seven boards to allow MC to out rebound the Captains 38-34.
The Scots will now prepare for a USA South road trip next weekend. They will play Mary Baldwin in Friday afternoon before challenging Averett University on Saturday.
