Defense sends Scots past Averett 64-41

The Maryville College women's basketball team opened a two game weekend swing through Averett University on Sunday afternoon. Following a low scoring first half, the Scots defeated the Panthers 64-41 to remain atop the USA South standings.

MC could not find their shooting touch in the first period going 10-for-29 while hitting only one trey. Averett kept pace with a 34% shooting display while MC's defense contested every shot. At the break Maryville led 27-21.

The Scots out rebounded Averett 42-35 and took advantage of numerous second shot opportunities. MC forced 22 Cougar miscues on 13 steals to cruise to the 23 point victory.

Averett (5-13, 4-7 USA South) did not have a player post double digits in scoring. Mette Scheiman finished with nine points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Maryville (15-2, 9-1 USA South) used an 18 point, five rebound effort by senior guard Kiera Payne. The reigning USA South Player of the Week went 5-for-11 from the floor while recording three steals on defense. Freshman Mackenzie Puckett added nine points while hauling down a game-high 12 rebounds. She also recorded a game-high four blocks in 24 minutes of action.

The Scots will conclude their road swing on Monday when they challenge the Fighting Squirrels of Mary Baldwin College. Tip-off in Staunton, Virginia is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
