Scots Claim USA South Opener over Averett, 81-60

The Maryville College women's basketball team opened their 2014 USA South Athletic Conference schedule with an 81-60 victory over Averett University on Friday evening in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium.

 

The Scots jumped out to a 38-23 halftime advantage after shooting 50% from the field. Averett could not find their perimeter attack, hitting only one trey before the intermission. Maryville increased their shooting percentage in the second half pulling away after forcing 25 Cougar turnovers. MC connected on 62% of their second half treys to finish with a 47% effort from beyond the arc.

 

Averett (1-5, 1-0 USA South) was paced by Jessica Myers, depositing 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting. Aundrea Burns and Brianna Taylor each added nine points for the Cougars.

 

Maryville (8-2, 1-0 USA South) was led by sophomore Mackenzie Puckett. The guard hit 9-of-13 shots while grabbing five rebounds, finishing with a game-high 21 points. Freshman Mindy Brackins was strong in the paint hitting 5-of-9 shots for 18 points while bringing down six boards. Senior guard Lauren Burnet added 10 points while going 2-for-2 from long distance. Kelsey Brown paced both squads on the boards with a game-high nine rebounds after depositing nine points.

 

The Scots will return to action tomorrow afternoon when they host USA South rival Ferrum College in the Cooper Athletic Center. Tip-off is slated for 2:00.
