Box Score The Ferrum College Panthers used a strong effort on the boards and an intense defensive effort to defeat Maryville College 75-50 in women's basketball on Saturday afternoon in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
Ferrum (6-0, 2-0 USA South) shot 48% in the first half while Maryville could not find their shooting touch. Going into the intermission, the Panthers held a 34-25 advantage.
As the Scots slightly elevated their percentage, they could only manage a 1-for-15 effort from beyond the arc. Ferrum increased their success rate from the field to a 55% effort while out rebounding MC 50-28 on the afternoon.
Ferrum was paced by Shea Smith's 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting. Boreika Burwell added 13 points while Kylene Culler finished with a double-double after posting a dozen points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Maryville (8-3, 1-1 USA South) was led by Jordan Ballard. She hit 50% of her shots finishing with a team-high 11 points. Mackenzie Puckett was limited to 10 points while leading the Scots with five boards. Lauren Burnett added nine points while Alex Bond tossed in eight points and four boards.
Maryville will now prepare for next weekend's USA South double-header at home. The Scots will host Greensboro College at 5:30 on Friday evening before challenging Methodist University for a 2:00 tip-off on Saturday.
