Box Score Alex Bond drove the lane, forcing the free throws with 1.5 ticks remaining on the clock during the Pat Deacon Classic at Transylvania University.
Bond notched the second free throw to seal the win over Bridgewater College, 70-69.
The Scots led by as many as 20 in the first half, but momentum killing drives by the Eagles slowed Maryville during the second half. With 59 seconds remaining in the game, Bridgewater had taken a 69-65 advantage.
A quick timeout by head coach Darrin Travillian allowed the Scots to set up their full-court press, which proved to be the difference. Bond and Jordan Ballard each bucketed shots off the press, while Bond drove the lane for the deciding free throw with 1.5 remaining on the clock.
Joanna Young grabbed a steal, as the Eagles set up a play to gain the win, 70-69, to move to 6-1 on the year.
Bond led Maryville with a complete game, finding team-leading efforts in points, assists and rebounds. The senior had 20 points, six assists and four rebounds in the first game of the Classic, while she was credited for one steal.
Ballard scored 12 points for the Scots, while Young added 11 points and three steals. Mindy Brackins had nine points, as Linley Dunn contributed eight. Mackenzie Puckett had six, and Rachel Hawn and Kelsey Brown tallied two each.
Cassidy Burkholder had 24 points for Bridgewater, while Jessica Lam added 18. Jessi Strom had 10 points, while leading the Eagles with six assists.
Maryville moves to 6-1 on the year, as they prepare for the second day of the Pat Deacon Classic tomorrow. The Eagles fall to 3-5.
