Box Score The Maryville College women's basketball team claimed the 2014 Pat Deacon Classic in Lexington, Kentucky with a 74-59 win over tournament host Transylvania University on Saturday afternoon.
The Scots defense held a previously undefeated Pioneer squad to a 43% shooting effort from the floor that included only a 29% conversion rate from beyond the arc. Maryville pulled ahead by hitting 52% from the floor and was on fire from the perimeter hitting 7-of-12 (59%) from long distance.
Maryville displayed their selflessness play throughout the game with 20 assists on 33 baskets. Junior guard Jordan Ballard directed the offensive with 11 assists on the afternoon. Four Scots posted double digits with Mackenzie Puckett pacing the Scots with 19 points. Mindy Brackins finished 6-for-8 from the floor with 15 points while Lauren Trent dropped a trio of treys for 13 points. Rachel Hawn was strong in the post hitting 5-of-8 shots for 10 points.
"We had an unbelievable defensive effort today," stated Maryville College Head Coach Darrin Travillian. " On offense the distribution of points was outstanding. The assists truly speak to our unselfishness. Jordan ran our squad with great efficiency today. We had many contributors and today's win was a total team effort."
Transylvania (8-1) was led by Katelyn Smith's 25 points on 9-of-19 shooting while Nicole Coffman added 10 for the Pioneers.
Maryville will take some time off for the holiday season and return to action on the road January 2 in Danville, Virginia. The Scots will open their 2014-2015 USA South schedule with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off at Averett University.
