Box Score The Maryville College women's basketball team dropped their second consecutive USA South road challenge with a 58-54 loss at Piedmont College on Wednesday evening.
Both team were sluggish in the first half with Maryville taking a 23-18 advantage into halftime. The Scots held the Lions to 20% shooting from the field, but managed only a 37% shooting effort while not hitting a single trey.
Piedmont closed out the game hitting 52% of their shots. The Lions connected on 10-of-13 (77%) free throw opportunities while MC went to the charity stripe only six times in the second half. The Scots could not find their perimeter touch hitting only 1-of-16 three pointers on the evening.
Piedmont (16-8, 10-5 USA South) was led by Chandler Alverson's game-high 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting.
Maryville (19-5, 12-3 USA South) was paced by freshman Mindy Brackins in the paint. Brackins hit 6-of-12 shots for a team-high 14 points. Alex Bond finished with13 points after depositing 6-of-9 shots. Lauren Burnett and Jordan Ballard each tallied eight points while combining for 18 rebounds. Ballard paced both squads on the boards with 10.
"This was another tough conference loss tonight," stated MC Head Coach Darrin Travillian. "Given our current injuries, our margin of victory is very small. Missed opportunities are magnified. My hope is that we bounce back and give a great effort on Saturday for our two great seniors."
The Scots will prepare for their regular season finale on Saturday when they host Huntingdon College for "Senior Day". MC will honor seniors Lailah Farmer and Lauren Burnett before their 2:00 tip-off in the Boydson Baird Gymnasium. Maryville has clinched the USA South Southern Division title and awaits seeding for the league tournament beginning on Thursday, February 27th.
