Box Score The Maryville College Lady Scots basketball team advanced to the finals of the USA South Championships with a 69-46 victory over LaGrange College in Ferrum, Virginia on Friday evening.
The Scots out paced the Panthers 36-24 in the first half with a 50% shooting effort while also going 6-for-15 from beyond the arc. MC's stingy defense allowed LaGrange only a 33% success rate from the field.
Maryville pulled away in the second half allowing only 22 points while finishing the game 48% from the field and 11-for-25 (44%) from long distance.
LaGrange (16-11) was led by Shaye Butler's 11 points. Madison Barker added 10 points in the elimination loss.
Maryville (22-5) used a solid effort by Jordan Ballard, who deposited 7-of-8 shots including three treys for a game-high 17 points. Lauren Trent was deadly from beyond the arc hitting 5-of-10 three pointers for 15 points. Lauren Burnett added 11 points and six rebounds while Kelsey Brown tallied eight points and a team-high nine rebounds.
"The toughness and determination of this team is incredible," stated MC Head Coach Darrin Travillian. "We really battled defensively and executed offensively. We are thrilled to compete for the championship tomorrow."
The Scots, winners of the USA South Southern Division, will challenge nationally ranked and tournament host Ferrum College for the USA South title on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m. The winner will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA post-season.
