Box Score The Maryville College women's basketball clinched the USA South southern division regular season title with a 77-51 win over LaGrange College on "Senior Day" in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium Sunday evening.
Seniors Kelsey Brown, Lauren Trent, and Alex Bond expanded their career record to 88-21.Winning another USA South challenge sent their success rate to over 90% when facing league opponents over the past four seasons.
Maryville's stingy and smothering defense held the Panthers to 38% shooting in the first half while their 14-for-31 effort from the floor and 6-for-11 pace (55%) from beyond the arc gave the Scots a 42-26 advantage.
The Scots cruised in the second half as LaGrange could not connect on seven perimeter shots while hitting only 7-of-23 shots to close out the game. MC out paced the Panthers 35-25 in the closing period on a 48% shooting effort and finishing 9-for-17 (53%) from long distance.
The Scots out rebounded LaGrange 35-26 including 13 offensive boards while MC's offense capitalized on 13 Panther turnovers.
LaGrange (15-9, 10-5 USA South) was paced by the double-double effort of Shaye Butler. Butler tossed in 11 points while grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds. Madison Barker finished with 14 points on 3-of-7 shooting, connecting on 8-of-9 free throws.
Maryville (21-2, 13-1 USA South) saw Jordan Ballard dish out seven assists to three double-digit scorers. Sophomore Mindy Brackins tallied a game-high 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Senior Lauren Trent finished with 15 points on four three-pointers bringing her career total to 144 treys. Senior Alex Bond secured her 705th career point with a 14-point effort. Senior Kelsey Brown added her 275th career rebound with five boards on the afternoon. Freshman post player Rachel Hawn added nine points on 4-of-6 shooting while bringing down a team-high six rebounds.
The Scots will prepare for their final home game on Wednesday when they host USA South foe Piedmont College. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
