Box Score The Maryville College Scots held on Saturday afternoon at Oglethorpe University, as MC won a nail-biter, 57-54, over the Stormy Petrels.
The Scots struggled in a game that saw a total of 53 fouls called – 28 of those going against Maryville. By game's end, the Scots had two players fouled out and a trio with four fouls.
In a contest that saw four ties and 13 lead chances, MC had the chance to ice the game with 21 seconds left, but both free-throw attempts rattled free. Madi Foltz pulled down the rebound, as the Stormy Petrels called timeout to move the ball to half-court with 18.2 second remaining. From that point on, Oglethorpe had three chances to tie or win the game in the final seconds. Bailey Charles missed a lay-in with 13 second and a jumper with just nine second remaining.
Allyson Freiermuth added a free-throw with six ticks left, as the Stormy Petrels stood no chance with a lay-in with late, as Maryville took the win, 57-54.
Both squads were tied, 11-all, at the end of the first half, before Maryville was able to take a 27-23 lead to the locker room after a Mindy Brackins trey late in the second quarter.
Oglethorpe would cut that lead to just one, 44-43, going into the fourth, before the Scots could hold on late in the game.
Maryville shot just 31.6 percent from the floor, bucketing 18-of-57. They did make seven treys, however, as the Stormy Petrels struggled at the charity stripe.
Oglethorpe tallied just a 45.9 percent effort from the free-throw line, going 17-of-37 after 28 Maryville fouls.
Maryville had 17 turnovers to Oglethorpe's 15, but the Stormy Petrels outscored MC 12-5 in points off turnovers.
The Scots (5-2) was led by Madison Maples 13-point effort, as she had five rebounds and three assists. Haley Talbott added 10 points to go with four boards and two treys.
Freiermuth had eight points, to go with a game-high 14 rebounds. She sank the final free-throw to help ice the game, while going 6-of-7 from the line.
Amber Hudgens had seven points, while Mindy Brackins had six with a pair of 3-pointers. Rachel Hawn had six points and five rebounds, while Lauren Biliter added five. Brittany Johnson had two points, while ranking second on the team with eight rebounds from the guard position.
Oghelthorpe (5-2) saw Foltz finish the game with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Jada Triplett had 11 points. Lauren Ransom had 10 points, while Bailey Charles had a team-leading eight rebounds.
Maryville returns home for a non-conference game against Centre College on Thursday, Dec. 15. The Scots downed the Colonels 73-39 earlier this season. Tipoff for that game is slated for 7 p.m.
