Freiermuth, Talbott help Scots to 63-47 win over Rhodes

Maryville College earned a key win on Friday, 63-47, before they enter the USA South Athletic Conference schedule in the new year.

The Scots tallied a near 20-point victory over the Lynx on Rhodes College inside Boydson Baird Gymnasium on Friday, as a total of eight different players scored. Strong post play from Allyson Freiermuth, Rachel Hawn and Amber Hudgens coupled with an inside-out game to Haley Talbott helped the Scots to an 8-3 mark before entering conference play.

Maryville took a 19-11 lead after the first quarter, extending that to a 35-24 advantage at the end of the first half. The third quarter, however, pushed the Scots over the top, as they outpaced the Lynx, 14-5.

Freiermuth had six of her game-high 16 points in the third quarter, while Talbott added five of her 14. Libby Gardner was 1-for-1 from beyond the arc in the stanza, as Maryville jumped to a 49-29 lead after three quarters.

Maryville was strong offensively in the win, as the Scots shot 45.8 percent (27-of-59) from the floor on the afternoon. MC bucketed nine treys on the day behind a 47.4 percent clip, while going 0-of-2 at the charity stripe.

The Orange and Garnet saw a strong inside game from Freiermuth, Hawn and Hudgens, as the Scots tallied 32 of their 63 points in the paint. They held the Lynx to only 20 points inside the paint, as MC's bench outscored Rhodes', 26-12.

Maryville managed 21 assists on 27 made baskets on the afternoon.

The Scots held the Lynx to a 28.8 percent effort (19-of-66), while allowing only a pair of 3-pointers. Rhodes shot 2-of-19 from beyond the arc for a 10.5 percent effort. They were 7-of-11 (63.6 percent) from long range.

Maryville outpaced their in-state rivals, 44-38, on the boards, after the Lynx held the advantage at the half. Rhodes posted 19 boards in the opening half to MC's 16, as the Lynx tallied nine offensive boards in the first half.

For Maryville (8-3), it was Freiermuth that led the way with 16 points. She had nine rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks for a complete game.

Using the inside-out attack, Talbott followed Freiermuth with 14 points of her own. She went 4-of-9 from beyond the arc, while adding three rebounds and a block.

Hawn had eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while Hudgens had seven points, four rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block. Gardner had six points, including a 2-of-2 effort from the 3-point line, as she added four assists. Delaney Lowery had five points, while Madison Maples added four. Laurent Biliter had three points with four assists.

For Rhodes College (1-10), it was all Jessie Ustick. Ustick had 14 points, eight rebounds, two steals and an assist, while the next closest scored was Erin Deery.

Deery tallied nine points and seven rebounds for the Lynx. Ashley Foret had four steals, while Bailey Kramer had two blocks.

Maryville will open the USA South schedule on Jan. 6 and Jan. 7 inside Boydson Baird Gymnasium. The Scots will host Salem College on Jan. 6 for a 7 p.m. tipoff, before taking on Piedmont College on Jan. 7. Tipoff for the game against the Lions is slated for 4 p.m.
