Freiermuth's career high double-double leads MC past Covenant, 64-41

Box Score

Maryville College's Allyson Freiermuth tallied her second-straight double-double on Tuesday night, as she led the Scots to their 10th win on the year, 64-41, over Covenant College.

Freiermuth, a 5-foot-10 senior from Marcy, New York, was a force to be reckoned with, as she totaled a pair of career highs in Tuesday's win over Covenant.  She had a game high 20 points and 15 rebounds on the night – all of that coming in only 22 minutes of action.

"When Allyson came here to visit two years ago to visit, I said, 'Why do you want to be here?'" Head Coach Darrin Travillian said. "She said, 'All I want to do is win ball games.' I said, 'I think we're going to get along just fine.' That's what she does. She got those two quick fouls in the first half, and we didn't get to play her. You see it. It hurts us. We're better when she's on the floor. The whole time she's on the bench, she's coaching and trying to help people, but I don't need another assistant. I need her out there being an All-Conference post."

The senior post tallied only six points and one board during the first half, before opening up the game during the second half.

Freiermuth's 20-point outing bests her previous career mark of 18 set almost one year ago in a 78-54 win over N.C. Wesleyan College. Freiermuth's 15 boards also is a career mark, topping her 14-rebound performance.

The senior has had three 14-rebound contests, the latest being on Sunday, Jan. 8 against Piedmont College.

In her past two ball games, Freiermuth has amassed 32 points and 29 rebounds.

After a 13-13 tie following the first quarter, Maryville exploded in the second quarter for 19 points to Covenant's eight. Haley Talbott had a pair of key treys early in the quarter, after the Georgian Scots took the lead on a trey. Talbott matched each, before Maryville went on a run.

Talbott had six in the second quarter, while Amber Hudgens had five and Lauren Biliter, four.

Maryville took a 32-21 lead to the locker room.

The hometown Scots would only build on that lead in the second half, outscoring Covenant 32-20 in the second half for the 64-41 win.

Maryville moves to 10-3 on the season, while holding a 2-0 mark in the USA South Western Division.

MC is one of only two teams in the Western Division with an unblemished conference mark, as Huntingdon College holds a 3-0 record. The Scots travel to Montgomery, Ala. to face the Hawks at 7:00 p.m. EST, 6:00 p.m. CST.

Freiermuth's 20-point, 15-rebounds performance came as the senior shot 6-of-11 from the floor.  She was 8-of-8 from the charity stripe, while adding two steals and two blocks.

Talbott followed with 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc, as she tallied two boards, two steals and an assist. Lauren Biliter had 10 points, while pulling down seven rebounds. She had four steals and two assists for a complete game.

Forward Rachel Hawn had six points, five rebounds and a team-leading five assists, as she totaled two steals on the night, as well. Hudgens had five points and eight rebounds, while Madison Maples also had five points.

Lecretia Robbins and Libby Gardner each had two points.

Maryville shot 22-of-59 (37.3 percent) from the floor, while bucketing five treys on a 20.8 percent clip. They were 15-of-18 from the free-throw line, while out-rebounding the Georgian Scots, 44-36.The Scots had 17 steals on the night to go with 16 assists.

MC scored 23 points off 25 Covenant turnovers.

Covenant (6-6, 0-2 USA South) shot 30.4 percent on the night (17-of-56) while tallying seven treys. They went 0-for-5 from the charity stripe.

The USA South foe saw Aleigha Williams finish with 15 points and five rebounds, while Emma Grimes and Kaley Hallmark each had 11 points.

Rachel Price led Covenant with nine rebounds, as she had a team-high four steals. Clara Dirkse three assists.

Maryville will look to the USA South road swing this weekend. After facing Huntingdon on Friday night, MC will travel to LaGrange College on Saturday, Dec. 14. Tipoff for that game is slated for 6 p.m.
