Varney, Garnder score 20-plus as Huntingdon takes USA South opener, 82-65

Maryville College opened USA South Athletic Conference play on Friday night, as the Scots fell to Huntingdon College, 82-65.

MC's Libby Gardner and Klaire Varney scored 20 and 23 respectively on the night, but four double-digit scorers for Huntingdon would prove the difference.

In all, the Hawks had nine different players score on the night

Maryville held a five-point lead with 5:19 left in the first quarter, before Huntingdon cut the lead to two, 25-23, following the first 10 minutes.

MC extended it back to a 27-23 lead at the 9:05 mark, before the Hawks used a 7-0 run to take a 30-27 lead. Huntingdon would shoot 38.9 percent from the field in the second quarter, as they held Maryville to just a 2-of-10 (20 percent) effort in the 10-minute quarter.

The Hawks outscored MC, 17-9, in the period, as they held a 40-34 lead at the break.

MC would attempt a rally in the fourth, but a 61.5 percent shooting effort by Huntingdon in the final quarter kept the lead for an 82-65 final score.

Maryville (0-5, 0-1 USA South) was led by Varney's 23 points and nine rebounds. The sophomore added four assists and a pair of steals on the night, as she went 9-of-12 at the free-throw line.

Gardner – a junior – tallied 20 points on 3-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc, as she has two rebounds, and assist and a steal. Elsa Eckenrod at 11 points on a 3-of-3 effort from 3-point range to go with five rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block.

Erin Beasley, Brooke McCurdy and Shelby Hix each added a trio of points on the night, as McCurdy had three rebounds and an assist. Kelley Wandell had two points and six boards of Maryville on the night.

The Scots shot 19-of-62 (30.6 percent) from the floor, as they tallied seven treys at a 35 percent clip. MC was 20-of-25 at the free-throw line.

Huntingdon (4-1, 1-0) posted a 48.3 percent effort (28-of-58) from the floor, as they found driving lanes late in the game. The Hawks shot 42.9 percent from long range, bucketing nine 3-points in the game.

Huntingdon outrebounded Maryville, 45-34, raking advantage of 36 points in the paint. The Hawks shot 58 percent (18-of-31) inside the paint, as they held Maryville to an 11-of- 36 effort (30.6 percent) down low.

Huntingdon was led by T.I. Duncan's double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds. She added eight assists and two steals to near a triple-double. Alex Lowery had 18 points on five treys, while Hannah Parks tallied 15 points off the bench to go with nine rebounds. Shaonica Thomas posted 13 points for the Hawks.

Maryville College will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 1, as they host LaGrange College. The USA South matchup inside Boydson Baird Gymnasium is slated to tip at 3 p.m.
