Box Score Huntingdon College used a strong second half, including a 20-10 run in the final eight minutes, to defeat the Maryville College Scots in women's basketball by the score of 77-61 in Montgomery, Alabama on Sunday afternoon.
Maryville jumped out to a commanding 25-12 advantage in the first quarter when they went 11-for-17 from the floor (62-percent) with Klaire Varney depositing seven points while Shelby Hix and Abbi Joseph each adding five points.
The Hawks outpaced the Scots in each of the remaining quarters. Maryville connected on only 35-percent of their shots in the middle stanzas before going only 3-of-12 (25-percent) in the final period.
A Courtney Carruthers three-pointer and following bucket cut the Hawks' lead to 62-57 with 6:37 remaining, but MC could not chip away as their USA South hosts finished the final quarter hitting almost 56-percent of their attempts from the floor.
Huntingdon (3-6, 3-0 USA South) was led by Shaonica Thomas's game-high 23 points. Indya Lawrence added 14 points while Ry Whetstone and Wyat Bak each tossed in 10 points. Thomas also led all players on the boards with nine rebounds.
Maryville (8-3, 2-1 USA South) was paced by Klaire Varney's 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting. The junior also posted five assists and five rebounds. Shelby Hix dropped 12 points while bringing down five boards. Courtney Carruthers added 10 points on a pair of three-pointers.
The Scots will prepare for their final USA South road challenge before Christmas break with a 6 p.m. tip-off against Berea College in Berea, Kentucky on Wednesday, December 18th.
