Box Score Maryville College could not capitalize on a 10-point halftime lead as USA South rival LaGrange College rallied in the final quarter to defeat the Scots 52-48 in women's basketball on Saturday afternoon in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
The Scots were stingy defensively allowing only 17 first-half points on 6-of-31 shooting. Maryville took the 10-point advantage into the intermission after a 6-for-16 effort (40-percent) in the second quarter.
MC held the Panthers to only a 3-for-18 effort and only eight total points from the floor in the third quarter, but the Scots did not take advantage as they only deposited 4-of-15 shots.
Leading 40-25 going into the final period, LaGrange exploded for an almost 59-percent shooting effort (10-for-17) while outpacing the Scots 27-8. The Panther's Nadia Montour dropped 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting to close out the victory.
LaGrange (11-6, 5-4 USA South) was paced by Jahpera McEachin's 12 points and six rebounds. Montour finished with 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds while Daijah Cousins added nine points off the bench.
Maryville (13-5, 6-3 USA South) was led by Klaire Varney's 12 points, nine rebounds, and four assists while Elsa Eckenrod tossed in 12 points while bringing down seven boards. Courtney Carruthers contributed nine points while Kelley Wandell attacked the boards with nine rebounds.
The Scots will be back on Randy Lambert Court on Sunday when they host Huntingdon College for another tough USA South challenge beginning at 2:00 p.m.
