Carruthers, Varney score 21 each as Scots run past Hawks, 75-53

Maryville College's Klaire Varney and Courtney Carruthers scored 21 points each, as the Scots used a strong second-half performance to defeat Huntingdon College, 75-53, on Sunday afternoon.

A defensive second quarter, followed by a strong offensive fourth quarter, aided the Scots in earning the 22-point USA South Athletic Conference victory. MC held Huntingdon to just one field goal in the second quarter, while outscoring the visitors, 17-8.

Maryville dominated the paint in the second quarter, totaling 10 points. They extended their margin to 11 points by the end of the quarter, eventually taking a 35-25 lead to the locker room. Huntingdon's lone field goal came with just 51 seconds left in the 10-minute quarter.

Maryville again outscored the Hawks in the fourth, 25-13, behind its blistering offensive attack. The Scots broke free with a 9-of-13 effort from the floor in the fourth quarter that was good enough for a 69.2-percent outing. They also added a 6-of-11 effort from the free-throw line down the stretch to secure the victory.

Maryville College (14-5, 7-3 USA South) followed the 21-point outings of both Varney and Carruthers, as the duo had nearly identical performances from the floor. Varney shot 7-of-13, while the freshman added an 8-of-14 effort.

Varney had six rebounds, six steals, three assists and a block, while going 7-of-12 from the free-throw line. Carruthers had five steals, four assists and a 3-pointer on her resume for afternoon.

Elsa Eckenrod scored double figures with 10 points, foure rebounds and three assists, while Libby Gardner added nine points, three rebounds and two assists. Holland Jerrolds tallied eight points off the bench with four boards, a steal and a block.

Senior Kelley Wandell boasted six points and a team-high 10 rebounds. She also had three blocks, two assists and a steal to her credit, while Shelby Hix had six boards, two assists and a steal. Hannah Jones posted three rebounds and a steal on the afternoon.

Maryville shot 28-of-60 (46.7 percent) on the day, while knocking down a trio of treys. The Scots went 16-of-26 from the charity stripe, while outscoring the Hawks in the paint, 44-20. They also had 27 points off 23 turnovers, which they turned into 14 fast-break points.

Huntingdon College (9-11, 8-3) was held to a 30.4-percent effort (17-of-56). They added two 3-pointers and a 17-of-30 (56.7 percent) effort from the free-throw line. The Hawks held the rebound advantage, 43-42, behind 14 offensive boards.

Ry Whetstone tallied 20 of the Hawks 53 points, while adding nine rebounds, two blocks, two steals and an assist. Shaonica Thomas tallied a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds, while Alina Shoemake and Indya Lawrence dished out a combined nine assists.

Maryville will return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 29, as the Scots host Berea College. Tipoff for the USA South bout is set for 6:00 p.m.
