Box Score Maryville College junior Klaire Varney was a single assist from a triple-double and the Scots' defense shut down their USA South hosts as MC defeated Agnes Scott College 82-46 in Decatur, Georgia on Saturday afternoon.
MC's defense forced 28 turnovers with Varney leading the pack with 10 steals. Maryville tallied 32 points off the Scottie's miscues.
"Today was a great team victory," stated Maryville College Head Coach Darrin Travillian. "We really defended for three quarters and shared the ball. Road wins are always the toughest, so we definitely are glad to get this one."
A first-quarter lull where Agnes Scott outpaced MC 20-14 on 50-percent shooting was quickly overturned when Maryville deposited 12-of-21 second-quarter shots (57-percent) while forcing 13 turnovers on a dozen steals. Maryville's stingy defense allowed only a collective 7-for-29 effort from the floor (23-percent) the final pair of quarters to pull away for the league road win.
Maryville (15-6, 8-4 USA South) moved into fourth place in the USA South Western Division with the win. Varney's complete game paced the Scots. She finished with a game-high 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting while dishing out nine assists to go with her 10 steals. Shelby Hix and Courtney Carruthers each posted a 17-point effort. Hix went 7-for-10 from the floor including a trio of treys while grabbing a team-high seven rebounds. Carruthers went 7-for-13 from the floor that included a pair of shots from beyond the arc. Elsa Eckenrod shot 50-percent from the floor en route to a 15-point performance. Abbi Joseph tossed in nine points and seven rebounds to help MC outrebound the Scotties 43-36.
Agnes Scott (0-21, 0-12) was led by Garis Grant's 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting while Emma Olson added 13 points.
Maryville will return to action at Piedmont College on Tuesday, February 4th before hosting Covenant College on February 12th.
