Box Score Maryville College celebrated the careers of seniors Libby Gardner and Kelley Wandell on Saturday afternoon, as the Scots wrapped up the regular season with a 65-29 win over USA South foe Agnes Scott College.
MC honored their pair of seniors before the contest, before earning a No. 3 seeding in the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament. Shelby Hix had 20 points to lead the Scots, while Klaire Varney added 11.
MC's pair of seniors had a strong showing in the contest, as well, as Wandell posted nine points, six rebounds and a block. Gardner had five points, four boards, three assists and three steals, as neither senior gave up a single turnover on the day.
Saturday's victory earns the Scots' No. 3 seeding by way of tiebreak. Huntingdon College fell to Piedmont College, 78-56, to force a tie between MC and the Hawks. It took six tiebreakers for Maryville to learn they would face Covenant College at home for the first round.
The Scots will face off on Wednesday, Feb. 19. A time is to be determined.
Against the Scotties, Maryville came out hot, going up 6-0. MC extended that to a 13-2 lead, as Elsa Eckenrod assisted on each of the first four buckets.
Maryville held a 21-7 advantage after the first 10 minute, as the Scots extended that to a 36-17 lead at the break.
Hix had 10 points in the first half, as Varney had nine points, four assists and four steals. Maryville shot 45.5 percent (15-of-33) behind their 9-of-15 first quarter, as they held the Scotties to a 5-of-24 effort (20.8 percent) during the first 20 minutes.
The second half started off slow, as the teams went scoreless for 4:22. A Hix 3-pointer broke that silence at the 5:38 mark, as Gardner supplied the assist. That started a 13-0 run for MC that would put the game out of reach.
Hix had a pair of treys, while Varney added another in the rally. Emma Olson would score Agnes Scott's only two puts with a jumper from Musumaulai Galoia, with Maryville outscoring the visitors 19-2 in the third quarter.
The Scots claimed their 18th victory of the season, 65-29.
Maryville (18-7, 11-5 USA South) was paced by Hix would went 8-of-13 from the floor with four treys. She had three steals and a pair of rebounds to her credit. Varney had a complete game with 11 points, seven assists, five steals, four rebounds and a block, while Wandell added her nine and six.
Abbi Joseph tallied seven points, as Eckenrod had six points, six assists and four rebounds. Garnder had five points, while Hayley Harmon added three points and a pair of assists. Holland Jerrolds had two points, six rebounds, three blocks, an assist and a steal, as Kaylee Collier added two points of her own.
Maryville shot 27-of-63 (42.9 percent), while knocking down 10 3-pointers. Maryville had 26 points off 25 turnovers, as the Scots dominated the paint, 32-12.
Agnes Scott (1-24, 1-15) shot 16.7 percent (9-of-54) for the game, as they were held to a 1-of-16 effort from long range. The Scotties outrebounded the Scots, 43-39.
Olson had 11 points and four rebounds, while Kamiyla Lane added eight points and nine boards. Garis Grant also had nine rebounds, as she added four points, three steals, two blocks and an assist.
