Turnovers, offensive boards too much for Scots against Piedmont, 81-56

Maryville College's Klaire Varney and Shelby Hix scored double figures on Tuesday night, but turnovers and offensive boards proved too much against Piedmont College, 81-56.

Varney garnered 23 points on the night, while shooting 57.1 percent from the floor. Hix outshot Varney with a 71.4-percent effort, tallying 11 points against the Lions.

Amari Price would tally a triple-double in Piedmont's effort, boasting 19 points, 10 rebounds and 10 steals, three assists and a block.

Maryville allowed 32 turnovers and 22 offensive rebounds against the USA South foe, as Piedmont took advantage with 22 more shots than the Orange and Garnet.

The Lions turned those opportunities into 34 points off turnovers and 11 second-chance points to claim the conference challenge.

Maryville would head to the locker room at the break, trailing 37-20. A Hix lay-in early on cut Piedmont's lead to two, 7-5, before the Lions would use a 16-2 run over the next 6:15.

Piedmont outscored the Scots, 14-9 in the second stanza to make the halftime margin.

Varney and Hix had six points each, while Abbi Joseph added five points of her own in the first 20 minutes.

For Piedmont, Amari Price and Nikiyah Washington led eight Lions in the scoring column with nine points each. Price also added a seven first-half steals to frustrate the Scots' offensive efforts. The Scots gave up 19 turnovers for 20 points.

In the second half, 17 offensive rebounds by Piedmont would keep the Scots offense stalled.

The two teams were even in the third quarter, 22-all.

Maryville (15-7, 8-5 USA South) was paced by Varney who shot 8-of-14 on the night. She added six rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block to her credit. Hix boasted 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting.

Courtney Carruthers added seven points, six rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals, while Joseph had five points and six rebounds.

Libby Gardner, Elsa Eckenrod and Hannah Hones had three points each, while Kelley Wandell added one point. Eckenrod had six rebounds, while Wandell added four boards and two blocks.

MC shot 40.8 percent (20-of-49) from the floor, while connecting on five 3-pointers at a 29.4-percent clip.

Piedmont (14-8, 8-5) was paced by Price's triple double, as she paced the squad with seven offensive rebounds. Washington added 13 points, nine boards, six steals, five assists and a block, while Emily Wiley had 13 points. Kyla Michienzi had 10 points for the Lions.

Maryville will have a week off, before the Scots return to action inside Boydson Baird Gymnasium. It will be the Battle of the Scots, as MC hosts Covenant College at Wednesday, Feb. 12 with a 6:00 p.m. tipoff.
