Box Score The Maryville College women's basketball team cruised to a 73-42 USA South Athletic Conference home victory over Huntingdon College on Saturday afternoon.
Maryville's Klaire Varney posted a complete effort with a game-high 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting while sinking a pair of three-pointers. The senior from Crossville was perfect from the charity stripe going 5-for-5 while bringing down seven boards. She dished out five assists while also recording a trio of steals. Freshman Jordan Heifner tallied a collegiate career-high 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting while adding five rebounds. Heifner was also perfect from the free-throw line helping MC finish 20-for-22 (90-percent) from the free-throw line during the victory.
While Maryville was posting 25 fast-break points and a 51-38 rebound margin, the Scots pulled away with their stingy defense allowing the Hawks' offense only an 11-for-58 success rate (19-percent).
Kelley Wandell was dominant in the paint recording a game-high 14 rebounds while swatting away four blocks and adding a steal on defense. Shelby Hix battled for seven rebounds while adding five points. Elsa Eckenrod and Courtney Carruthers each posted eight points helping MC finish over 40-percent from the floor for the afternoon.
Huntingdon (0-2, 0-2 USA South) was paced by Alina Shoemake's 10 points. A.B. Davis added nine points in the tough road loss.
Maryville (2-0, 2-0 USA South) will take their 81 points per game scoring average on the road next weekend to challenge USA South foe Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia.
