Scots Fall 79-69 to Oglethorpe

DANVILLE, Ky. – Maryville's best shooting night of the young season couldn't lift the Scots past Oglethorpe in a 79-69 decision at the Lee's Famous Recipe/Hampton Inn Classic, hosted by Centre.

Maryville as a team shot 46.8 percent from the floor and was a sizzling 19-of-20 from the line. The Scots were 6-of-14 from downtown for 42.9 percent, giving them season highs in all three shooting categories.

But Oglethorpe, which was the preseason pick to win the Southern Athletic Association, outrebounded the Scots 37-28 and turned that advantage into a 13-4 scoring margin on second-chance points. Points-off-turnovers also proved decisive, going 16-7 to the Stormy Petrels.

Maryville turned the ball over a season-low 16 times but forced just 11 Oglethorpe miscues.

Jordan Heifner scored a career-high 22 points for the Scots. The sophomore guard finished 6-of-12 from the field, including 3-of-6 from 3-point distance, and she made all eight free throws.

Hannah Jones scored 12 points and Elsa Eckenrod added 10.

Early Maryville Lead

There were four lead changes in the game, and all of those came in the first quarter. Eckenrod scored on a layup and then made a pair of free throws to give Maryville its largest lead at 15-10. But nine straight points sparked an 11-2 Oglethorpe run to end the quarter and the Stormy Petrels were in front 22-17.

Oglethorpe led 38-31 at halftime and 40-31 early in the third before Maryville made one last charge. Courtney Carruthers knocked down a 3-pointer and Eckenrod converted a fastbreak layup to tie the score 44-all with just over three minutes left in the third.

Once again, the Stormy Petrels refused to budge. They led 52-49 heading to the fourth and then poured in 27 points over the final 10 minutes to win going away for the first time this season.

Oglethorpe, now 1-4, got 23 points and nine rebounds from Sydni Donovan. Carley Bell added 21 points and Taylor Smith contributed a double-double with 11 and 10.

Maryville is 0-3 and takes on host Centre on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Colonels improved to 2-1 after Friday night's 64-55 comeback win over Franklin.
