Scots Claim First Victory of the Year

Box Score

Heifner, Eckenrod Double Figures in 62-53 Win

DANVILLE, Ky. – The first win of the season for Maryville came in the form of a 62-53 victory in the Lee's Famous Recipe/Hampton Inn Classic over host school Centre College.

"It feels good to get that first one," said Maryville head coach Darrin Travillian. "At the four-minute mark of every game this season, it's been one or two possessions. Today, we finally made the winning play in the clutch."

"I'm proud of the girls for defending, battling, and grinding one out on the road. Centre is so well-coached and hard-nosed that we knew this would be a battle until the end. I'm proud of the contributions we had throughout our entire roster."

"Now we have to try to regroup quickly and compete again on Monday," finished Travillian.

A new season-low in turnovers came for Maryville as they lost the ball only 10 times. The Scots forced the opponent to commit almost double that mark with a total of 17 turnovers befalling the Colonels.

Maryville turned those miscues into points as they were able to put in 14 off of Centre turnovers.

The Scots excelled down low as 32 of the 62 points scored by the visitors on the scoreboard came in the paint.

Jordan Heifner led the Scots in scoring with 16 points. She also led the team in rebounds as the sophomore pulled down eight in the game. Heifner led in assists and steals as well, with the guard adding three each.

Elsa Eckenrod also scored in double figures for Maryville with 15 added to the team's effort.

Taking Over

Around the four-minute mark of the second quarter, the Scots took control of the game. Shelby Hix made a layup to give the visiting team a 21-19 lead. Eckenrod then notched a three-point basket to add to the Maryville advantage. The lead held the rest of the contest.

The Scots carried a 28-22 lead into halftime, but the Colonels came fighting back in the third. An 8-0 run for Centre pulled the home team within three with 6:49 left in the third quarter.

Maryville did not fall prey to the Colonel comeback attempts and eventually built a 12-point lead at 60-48 with less than four minutes left in regulation. In the end, the buzzer sounded on a nine-point win for the Scots 62-53.

With the loss, Centre falls to an even 2-2 on the year. Presley Chirico led the Colonels with 20 points and eight rebounds. Bailey Rucker was next for the host team with nine points.

Maryville moves to 1-3 after the win and begins USA South play against Huntingdon on Monday at 5 p.m in the Boydson H. Baird Gymnasium. The Hawks sit at 2-1 entering Sunday's contest at Berea.
